Keema Chang Valentines Day Blog!
Valentine’s Day back when were dating was such a competition between us to see who could surprise who the most. But this particular year (in 2009) we had two separate days planned, and I had the day after Valentine’s Day. On his night, I came home from work and Young Chang (my husband) had my outfit laid out for me and everything. Now I’m a Virgo and I’m a control freak but this night I had no objection to anything for some reason, I was just calm and going w the flow!
We went to dinner and he kept getting up to use the phone but I kept calling my mom. We had just found out the week before that she had breast cancer ( which she survived and was in remission for 3 years before it came back, but that’s another story for another day). So I was always keeping tabs on her back in Dallas, while we were here in Florida. She kept telling me why are you calling me if you’re on a date? I’m like young keeps getting up so I had time to talk
Anyway, after dinner, we went to a poetry spot that I used to waitress for years with Ingrid B from The B Side. Young said he had to drop off some camera gear to a friend who was covering for him that night since he was taking me out, I’m like ok!
We get there and were are socializing and stuff then I hear Ingrid call young to the stage and they get me and have me sit in front of the stage. At this point I’m like OMG I can’t wait to go to the salon tomorrow and tell the girls Young wrote and performed a poem for me in front of everyone!!
Still, have no clue what was going on until he gets to the end of the poem and asked me to be his wife forever and I said OF COURSE BABY BOY !!! I was bawling by this time, tears streaming and I’m trying to cry cute and I saw the ring and in my head, I’m like how did he purchase this without me knowing?
I know everything lol) Anyway, he put the ring on my finger, finally, I stood up and looked up and my whole family was there and my friends! I was in total shock. My mom, dad, and brother were there and was apart of the whole plan, along with my friends. It was literally the best day of my life. Yes better than the wedding because I didn’t have to plan a single thing and I was totally surprised and caught off guard. There is something so special about people who love you so much that they truly go to great lengths just to see a smile on your face.
That year was the last year we took Valentines Day so serious. We got married a year later on February 21st, 2010, so now that’s our special day. But I could never forget the best day of my life was the day my husband proposed to me, Young definitely won that year!
